Miss Sturgill’s Class Writing Lesson

First graders in Miss Sturgill’s class enjoyed “birthday themed” writing lessons! They wrote a list of things needed for a party, practiced writing an invitation to remember which important words to capitalize, and even wrote a book on their opinion of the best type of birthday party. Children wrote a “how to…” story on planning a party and used sequence words to make their ideas flow. We ended the fun with Miss Sturgill’s sister visiting the class on her birthday with a great story to read to us!

Reorganization Committee Details School Options

Within a month the Hawthorn School District 73 Board of Education is expected to make a decision on a school option for its district. Parents are encouraged to attend a 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27 meeting at Middle School North to hear details about three options the school board will consider. Childcare is provided.

For details on these options, please visit the Hawthorn District 73 website, which provides an overview of the options as well as their benefits and challenges– Neighborhood Schools, 5 Choice Schools, Relocating Schools – and why grade level schools are no longer being considered an option for the district. The website offers parents an opportunity to provide their input into each of the options.

At Tuesday’s public forum parents will also have the opportunity to offer input into the options before the school board makes its decision.

All Aspen Library Books are Due This Thursday

Just a reminder that all student library books are due back before Thursday, 5/22.  This is the last week for library lessons due to inventory.

The overdue book notices that are being sent home remind students that they need to take care of lost books or they may have to be excluded from some fun end of the year activities.   We really hope this is not the case with any of our students, so please be sure to return your books or contact Mrs. Heaser.

Student Council Sponsors “Pennies for Pasta”

The Student Council is sponsoring a fundraiser called “Pennies for Pasta”.  Early next week each classroom will receive coin collection boxes for your students as well as one large collection box for your classroom.  The money collected goes to help children with leukemia and lymphoma.  The class that earns the most money wins a party from Olive Garden.
Student Council will be in charge of counting your change and will stop  by daily to collect your boxes, empty and count them.  We will announce the lead classroom each morning on the broadcast.

Healthy Lifestyles

5th grade students will be celebrating Healthy Lifestyles graduation on Thursday, May 22nd at 1:00 PM.  The ceremony will be hosted by District 73 School Resource Officer Andy Jones.  Officer Jones is working in cooperation with 5th grade and physical education teachers to promote healthy life choices for our 5th grade students.  Healthy Lifestyles took the place of the former D.A.R.E. program.  Students will be recognized for their work.  Parents of 5th grade students are welcome to join us to recognize their students.
