Aspen receives support from two separate parent groups:
First we have The Aspen Family Partnership Council supports Aspen School. The mission of the Aspen Family Partnership Council (AFPC) is to strengthen our community, bring families together and enhance relationships between students, families, teachers and staff. AFPC organizes and facilitates many activities to strengthen the community. Some of these activities include family nights, Family University, choice time recess activities, teacher’s helpers and library helpers. Next we have the Hawthorn District 73 Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Each year the PTO works with the school and community to help enrich educational experiences for students. The fundraisers help to support the purchase of enrichment materials and resources for all students at Aspen. Some resources made available through PTO funds include Geography Bee, Social Skills “Superflex” materials, classroom magazine subscriptions, assemblies and additional books for the Aspen School Library.
AFPC Chairs & Roles
The Chair oversees the AFPC council, is the liaison between the team chairs and the principal and the PTO, keeps the website current, helps recruit volunteers, sets event dates for the following year, reserves space through the facilities manager and provides dates to be put on the calendar.
This team provides an alternate to outdoor recess for 1st – 5th graders during the winter months of the school year. All materials are supplied for each activity (Legos, drawing, games, story time, etc…). Recesses are 20 minutes in length. The volunteers will supervise a selected activity once a week, once every other week, once a month, or whenever their schedules allow.
This team will volunteer in the school library for the following tasks: shelving books, checking books in and out, collecting requested books from the shelves, sharpening pencils, cutting paper for projects and other minor tasks. The librarian will coordinate the schedule with the chair.
The purpose of the Principal’s Helpers Team is to support the Principal in recognizing each student’s birthday with a birthday card from the Principal as well as an invitation to the Birthday Breakfast Celebration with the Principal for all students celebrating birthdays in that month. The Principal’s Helpers assist by filling out birthday cards and addressing the invites.
The purpose of this team is to provide opportunities for students and families to connect outside the school day. The Social Team is tasked with putting together all the details for our four Aspen family events each year. On average, each event requires the assistance of 10+ volunteers.
This team is primarily responsible for organizing and hosting the teachers and staff dinner during the Fall Conferences. Volunteers also provide help as needed for assemblies, special events and projects that pop up throughout the year.
This team helps our teachers complete projects in the workroom, including assembling book orders, copying, cutting/backing projects, die cutting, etc.
This team’s goal is to create a bridge between Aspen’s non-English-speaking community and the staff by translating communications between school and home and by guiding and assisting non-English-speaking families when needed.
