AFPC Fall 2016 Parent Education Workshop

Join us on October 27 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for an entertaining and insightful workshop titled “Bringing Quality Home:  Creating Continuity Between Aspen and Home” taught by Mrs. Szoke, Mrs. Zurek and Mrs. Carson.  This program is for PARENTS ONLY (no children please).  It is free, but for our planning purposes, please register .  For more information, or to register, please download the registration form, or email your information to nc.longdon@gmail.com.

AFPC Family Night this Friday, October 14th

The next Family Night takes place this Friday, October 14 from 6:30-8:00pm.  The amazing Brian Wismer will delight and entertain parents and students of all ages!  $7 per family, with Culver’s ice cream for sale at the event for $1.50 per cup.

AFPC Fall News

The AFPC has been busy!!!  Here’s an update on teams with upcoming events:

Social Team
Our next event is scheduled for Friday, October 14, 2016 at the school.  We will have the amazing Brian Wismer to entertain our students and families.  
The cost for your entire family to attend is only $7-what a deal!  We will also have Culver’s ice cream available for purchase.  Registration forms went home in backpack mail.  They can also be downloaded HERE.

Parent Education Team

We had our first meeting and have a terrific bunch of eager parents who not only want to learn about ways to better parent at home, but also about the Glasser Quality School model and how our teachers use Choice Theory at school.  Join us on Thursday night, October 27 from 7:00-8:30 for an insightful presentation from Mrs. Szoke, Mrs. Zurek and Mrs. Carson.

Choice Time

Choice Time will run from November 28-March 24.  Choice Time gives your child the unique opportunity to choose to do an indoor activity rather than go outside for recess during the winter months.  Look for fliers in backpack mail soon and sign up to volunteer!

Choice Time Team

Our students enjoyed many wonderful activities supervised by parents as an alternative to recess during the winter months.  A huge thank you to Heidi Gutowski for organizing this program and all our parent volunteers for making it possible: Xuhui Quan, Laura Zeigler,Jasmine Cheung, Lynn Cieslinski, Bertha Gallegos, Erica Miller, Heather Sublett, Stacey Sticklen, Lauren Viets, Renae Killen, Emma Gundran, Jeffery Sommers, Fatima Lara, Shelley Draper, Leah Heintz, Valeria Utsis, Jessie Hernandez, Maureen Collier, Lyssa Anthony, Jackie Cianfaglione, Alma Miranda, Sheets Mehta, Nicholas Avila, Nora Holleb, Ladan Mohmamood and Mrs. Caby!

Social Team

The AFPC Social Team has been busy this year!  From our Family Dance at the beginning of school, to the Magic Show, to our Read Around the World fun-filled night and finally our annual Bingo Night with pizza sales by our student council to benefit COVE Alliance…Aspen families come together to show our strong sense of school community!  Thank you to Stephanie Freed and Michelle Tran for chairing this Team, Mrs. Caby, Mrs. Howell, Mrs. Timony, and Mrs. Zurek for helping organize the Read Around the World event, and our Social Team volunteers who made them all possible:  Nicole Carson, Lynn Cieslinski, Maureen Collier, Aditi Desai, Marie Fricano, Lilli Garcia, Nora Holleb, Robyn Kaufman, Jamie Ritchie, Halley Romanoff, Lauren Viets.  A special thank you goes to Wendy Giovanetto, Sandy Fairbairn, Jim McDonald and all of our custodial staff for all of their support.

Parent Education Team

We offered Choice Theory 101 training in December-thank you to Mrs. Szoke, Mrs. Zurek and Mrs. Carson for teaching us the basics of Choice Theory!  Over 100 parents and students attended our Family University in February where parents were treated to an amazing workshop by Kim Olver, and students enjoyed fun and educational activities planned by our teachers and staff.  A huge thank you to the following teachers, staff and parents who made this possible:  Mrs. Carson, Mrs. Gerjol, Mrs. Manchester, Mrs. Motley, Kim Olver, Mrs. Szoke, Mrs. Block, Mrs. Caby, Ms. Sturgill, Mrs. Zurek, Mrs. Bonnem, Mrs. Chandler, Mrs. Gifford, Mrs. Howell, Mrs. Loiben, Ms. McNair, Mrs. Medberry, Mrs. Vynnyk, Mr. McDonald, Mrs. Giovanetto, Mrs. Fairbairn, Marie Fricano, Rachel Margolis, Nora Holleb, Lynn Cieslinski and all others who pitched in to help at the event.

Thanks For a Great Bingo Night!

What a night!  Over 255 kids, parents and grandparents attended our annual Bingo Night.  The evening was filled with laughter and loud shouts of “BINGO”!  Thank you for helping our Student Council raise nearly $500 in pizza sales!  All profits from the pizza sales will be donated to the COVE school in Uganda, Africa to help by desks, chairs and school supplies for the classroom VHHS sponsors.  A big thank you to our emcee, Mr. Fredricksen, our parent helpers:  Laura Ziegler, Lynn Cieslinski, Aditi Desai, Lily Garcia, Julie Simpson, Robyn Kaufman, Rita Ramaiya, Marie Fricano, Maureen Collier, Nicole Carson and Stephanie Freed, and to our pre-event helpers Mrs. Giovanetto, Mrs. Fairbairn and the custodial staff, and a special thank you to our 5th Grade helpers:  Nata, Saleem, Abi, Yasheta, Louie and Danielle.

Aspen Family Bingo Night on April 29th

Join us for Aspen’s last family event of the year on Friday, April 29 from 6:30-8:00p.m. Pizza will be served in the cafeteria from 6:30-7:00 and then we will move to the gym for Bingo from 7:00-8:00pm.   Aspen’s Student Council is partnering with VHHS to sell pizza for $3 per slice (or $5 for two slices if purchased in advance with registration by April 25th) with all profits going to benefit the COVE Alliance and help provide desks, chairs and classroom supplies for their Uganda school’s new 6th grade classroom. Please join us for a fun-filled evening! We urge you to register in advance for our planning purposes, but please feel free to attend and pay the $5 family registration fee at the door.
The AFPC NEEDS MANY VOLUNTEERS to make this night a success–please consider helping us in any of the following ways:  (1) Set-up from 4:30-6:30, (2) Event Helper from 6:30-8:00 (checking in families, overseeing students selling pizza, checking Bingo Cards, managing the prize table) and (3) Clean-up from 8:00-8:30.  Please email Nicole Carson at nc.longdon@gmail.com or call (847) 858-5602 if you are able to help in any way.  Thank you!!!

Aspen Travels the World Family Event

Please join us for ASPEN TRAVELS THE WORLD on Friday, February 19 at Aspen Elementary!  This FREE family event will have the kids ‘travelling’ around the world to experience hands on activities in each of the 7 continents!  Guests will complete passports by visiting each of the continents for a chance to win raffle prizes!  Snacks will be served!  The event will run from 6:30 – 8:00 PM.

Aspen’s 9th Annual Family University – 
Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 9:00 a.m.-Noon
Parent Program:  All parents will participate in a phenomenal NEW workshop taught by Kim Olver (Glasser Institute Executive Director and Faculty and acclaimed speaker/author) titled “Consequences-Discipline vs. Punishment” with home-school connection breakout sessions led by Mrs. Carson, Mrs. Gerjol, Mrs. Manchester, Mrs. Motley, Kim Olver & Mrs. Szoke.  Parents of students starting at Aspen in the fall of 2016 are invited to register and attend the Parent Program, but the Children’s Program is only for CURRENTLY registered Aspen families. Children’s Program (children MUST be at least 4 years old and currently enrolled Aspen family):  Our awesome educational program is organized by Mrs. Block, Mrs. Caby, Ms. Sturgill and Mrs. Zurek and taught by Ms. Abel, Mrs. Bonnem, Mrs. Chandler, Mrs. Gifford, Mrs. Howell, Mrs. Loiben, Ms. McNair, Mrs. Medbery and Mrs. Vynnyk.  Kids 4 years old through 1st Grade will learn how to identify their basic needs and meet them responsibly through age-appropriate educational activities which include “Around-the-World” themed team-building games, physical exercise, creative projects and story-telling.  Kids in 2nd Grade and older will focus on how to develop and maintain quality friendships through an engaging and fun science experiment and team-building games.  A snack will be provided.  (Aspen Graduates are needed…if they’d like to volunteer to help, please note so on your registration form or contact Mrs. Carson).  For a detailed description of the Children’s Program, click HERE.
