Water Filtration

Aspen School third graders celebrated Earth Day by learning about waste water filtration systems and completing an exciting STEM challenge. Students were then challenged to see if they could filter and clean the “sewage water” that the teachers had created. They were given limited supplies and had to work collaboratively as groups to create a gravity based filtration system.
Students in Jaimie Whitehead, Jenny Niedbalski, and Becky Zurek’s classes were able to successfully filter most of the “sewage” out of the water, however, they noticed that some pollutants still remained.  This STEM project brought light to the difficulties of keeping our water in lakes, rivers, and streams clean and clear of pollutants from waste water.
